We’ve spent the last week prepping for the SSA Show in Vegas (Come see us in booth 447!), and it got us thinking about just how valuable event based marketing can be for the Self Storage Industry. We thought we’d help you finish out the summer season with a few ideas of events you can stage at your facility to get current and new tenants on site!

People are decluttering for vacations, prepping for home improvement projects, or moving dorms. Here are some sizzling event ideas to attract new customers and engage existing ones:

  1. Summer Blockbuster: Outdoor Movie Night

    • Theme: Screen a classic summer movie outdoors on the facility property. (We're partial to The Sandlot around here, but the options are endless!)

    • Activities: Set up popcorn, snacks, and drinks for sale. Offer free giveaways or discounts on storage units.

    • Target Audience: Families in the neighborhood looking for a fun, free activity.

  2. Yard Sale Bonanza:

    • Theme: Allow tenants and other residents to showcase the .

    • Benefits: Generates foot traffic and showcases the cleanliness and security of your units. Charge a small fee per non-tenant-seller for participation, and offer a discount for those who participate.

    • Target Audience: People decluttering homes and those looking for summer bargains.

  3. Paris 2024: Self-Storage Olympics

    • Theme: Organize fun, storage-related games like packing contests, the ten unit dash, and the empty unit sweep out.

    • Activities: Award prizes for winners and offer refreshments.

    • Target Audience: Creates a lighthearted atmosphere and gets people familiar with your facility.

  4. Back to School I

    • Theme: If you are near a university, partner with local schools to collect donations for students moving into dorms (shower caddies, essentials, etc). Next summer when those students are moving out of the dorms, you’ll be their first choice for storage for the summer.

    • Benefits: Positions your facility as community-oriented and attracts student customers. Offer discounts to students who use your storage.

    • Target Audience: Students and parents preparing for dorm move-in.

  5.  Back to School II

    • Theme: Partner with local groups to collect backpacks, school supplies, etc for disadvantaged students in your community.

    • Benefits: Earned media for your facility, positions you as community and service oriented, and gets new people visiting your facility.

    • Target Audience: Community members who may be downsizing and in need of storage.

  6. Beat the Heat BBQ

    • Theme: Host a free BBQ lunch or dinner for potential and existing customers. For a few hundred dollars worth of burgers, dogs, and buns

    • Activities: Offer tours of the facility, answer questions, and have staff mingle with attendees.

    • Target Audience: Builds relationships and creates a welcoming environment for potential renters.

Bonus Tip: Promote your events heavily on social media, local classifieds, and community calendars. Use eye-catching visuals and highlight the benefits of attending.

By implementing these creative event ideas, your self-storage facility can stay top-of-mind with potential customers during the hot summer months!
